Break the Cycle: Stop Self-Sabotage and Take Control

Sometimes our own mind gets in the way of our goals. Self-sabotage means acting (or not acting) in ways that undermine our success. In fact, “self-sabotaging involves intentional action (or inaction) that undermines your progress and prevents you from accomplishing your goals”. Common examples include procrastination (waiting for the “perfect” moment), negative self-talk (“I’ll just fail anyway”), or setting impossible standards. These habits often come from fear of failure or even fear of success. By spotting them, you can choose a different path.

Spotting Self-Sabotage Patterns

  • Procrastination: Putting off important tasks because the idea of success (or failure) feels scary. This hides avoidance – you feel “never ready.”

  • Negative self-talk: Constantly criticizing yourself. Thoughts like “I’m not good enough” or “Everyone else can do it but me” chip away at confidence.

  • Overthinking: Second-guessing every decision or planning so much that you never start. This can be a way to avoid taking responsibility.

  • Unrealistic expectations: Demanding 100% from yourself 100% of the time. Perfectionism actually creates shame when something inevitably goes wrong.

These behaviors might have roots in past experiences (old messages from childhood or earlier failures), but they aren’t destiny. You can rewrite the script. The key is reclaiming your agency: the belief that your actions matter. Studies show people with an internal locus of control – those who feel they influence their own outcomes – tend to have better success and satisfaction. That means believing “I can shape my future” instead of blaming luck or others.

From Sabotage to Success

Once you notice a self-sabotaging thought or habit, pause and ask: Is this helping me achieve my goal, or holding me back? Replace it consciously. If you catch yourself thinking, “I’m going to fail,” reframe it: “It’s okay to try and learn, even if the outcome is uncertain.” When procrastination creeps in, start with one tiny step (just 5 minutes of the task); often action breaks the cycle.
